Monthly Dragon Age - May (4/9/2013)

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, Highschool of the Dead makes its long-awaited return in this issue. Chapter 30 is available for purchase now from Yen Press and will be scanlated by Renzokusei Scans probably within the next few days. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there will be a new chapter next month, and there isn't any clear indication as to when Chapter 31 will be released. The last page features the "To be continued" message in place of a date. Don't worry, though, because there is no reason to think the series will go on another hiatus. It likely just means they haven't decided when to release the next chapter yet.

Yen Press left out a page in their release that wasn't part of the chapter, and it just happened to be the page with the chapters title on it. For those of you wondering, the title is "Act.30 intellect, emotion, and DEAD". The page is below.

I'm planning on doing a post with my thoughts on the new chapter later. I'll include a few pages for those of you who are waiting for the scanlation.

As a huge fan of the works of H. P. Lovecraft, I was excited when I learned this month's new series, "D.Y.N. Freaks", is based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos (the stories focusing on cosmic horror and his invented pantheon of gods). Upon further investigation, it seems the series is actually based on a card game and interactive novel called Cthulhu Mythos that is loosely based on the works of Lovecraft. I was a bit disappointed, especially after seeing how it is not remotely reminiscent of anything I read in Lovecraft. Still, it could be a nice horror replacement for Higanbana, which ended a few months ago. Lots of blood and darkness. I'll be interested to see if it gets picked up.

After a 13-chapter run (an appropriate number for this next series), "Aimane - Akuma na Kanojo o Produce" ends this month. It was a good series for ecchi, but I guess there wasn't enough interest in the talent-agent-meets-devil-girl-and-helps-her-become-idol scenario to keep it going. If you're looking for a quick read with plenty of panty shots, Japanzai has been scanlating it.

This doesn't really relate to this issue, but I need to clarify a mistake I made last month. I told you the
Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi anime was starting March 31, but that was actually the date for the first trailer. These things happen when don't read Japanese and try to guess what thing say. The anime is really starting in July.

I probably won't have the raws for Triage X and Maken-Ki! up until tomorrow. I may have my thoughts on Act.30 later today, but it'll more likely be tomorrow.

Oh and here's that poster:

That what I thought the second time they went into hiatus, and we all know how that turned out.

    1. The second time, they announced a date for the next chapter, and then the tsunami happened and the chapter never came. None of us thought the hiatus was coming.

I don't think they would have brought the series back with only a single chapter planned. It doesn't make sense. "To be continued" is actually the next best thing to a specific date you can see at the end of a chapter.

  2. Were would we purchase this Dragon Age issue? I sometimes see it offered on sites like AmiAmi, but they don't see to have the May issue.

    1. I always use Amazon Japan. Just enter the Japanese title ドラゴンエイジ in the search box and it should be the first result.

    2. Thank you very much. For some reason Amazon JP always slips my mind when looking for this sort of thing.

Was able to make my purchase. Really want that poster. :)

    3. That's a lot to pay just for a poster. You also get to see the manga in its original state, so there's that too I guess.

  5. How big is the poster? I have the one with Saeko in the naked apron kneeling and that one is huge. Really want to order this months Dragon Age for the new poster.

    1. It's the standard large poster size. I think 2 feet by 3 feet.

    2. May I ask where did you get the Saeko poster? Did it come with a Monthly Dragon Age magazine?

  6. Waits for a HQ scan of that poster so I have a new background image....

The chapter makes me think the author wants to stop writing. Seems like it'll probably last 4-6 chapters tops. For a "Lets test the water chapter," it was pretty crudely done. Added too many major elements so quickly. And it seems the timeline has drastically be escalated. Oh well. Theres always triage. Maybe inazuma will do a zombie series if HotD ends. That or we can always wait for Fei's stuff during comiket.

Aww. Aimane - Akuma na Kanojo o Produce is pretty interesting is a shame. Hope the artist works on new stuff his art is awesome.

  8. Speedy_J here,

I was wondering, do you think you'll be looking into stats through ibooks, amazon, and other online sites that are offering the chapter and find out how the sales and numbers are doing throughout the week and even month?

    1. I'm not really sure how I would go about getting that data, but it would be interesting. I'm sure Yen Press will look at the data and adjust their next release accordingly--or at least they should.

  9. When my first Monthly Dragon Age arrived a while back, I was truly surprised how thick it was. All I ever see is a flat scan of the cover online. The magazine is nearly 2" thick, feels like a major city phone book. Amazing how much printed manga you get for the price (minus the $40 shipping of course).

I know it would put Turambar out of the scanning business, but wouldn't it be cool if the entire magazine were licensed by Yen Press then actually printed and sold in the US (at the same time of course), like it is in Japan. Think there would be a market?

    1. I would absolutely support that, and turn this site into a manga review and discussion blog. There are so many good series and oneshots that are never picked up or fully scanlated that I wish I could read.

Sadly, though, English publishers will only work on series they know will be popular (part of why they let people like me exist). They wouldn't take the risk of hiring enough translators and editors to get a whole magazine done every month. They may not even be able to get distribution rights to everything. The process would be a legal disaster.

    1. I'm not really sure what you're asking for. I only scan Trige X and Maken-Ki!, and you can find those in more recent posts. If I were to scan more I'd need to get paid for my time because I have a real life and real life stuff to do.
