Monthly Dragon Age - July (6/9/2013)

Nothing in this issue about new Highschool of the Dead. This isn't that surprising since Shouji Sato just kicked off a sequel to Fire Fire Fire at the end of May with a new chapter coming out in a couple weeks.

By the way, in case you missed it, here is Black Sword c1 (raw):

Gringe of XLG gave a quick synopsis for those of us non-Japanese readers:

The series is published by the online magazine Garaku no Mori. There doesn't seem to be a good way to get raws right now, but hopefully XLG will climb out of the abyss and pick it up when it is collected in tankoubon form.

Two new series in this issue. Firstly, the latest iteration of the BlazBlue manga adaptations, Calamity Trigger. I'm not sure where in the BlazBlue universe this fits in, but I'm pretty sure this is directly related to the anime adaptation coming later this year. The other is Dolls Fall, a sort of gritty psychological horror in the vein of Higanbana or Bloody Maiden that I would love to see picked up sometime (I'm talking to you, Village Idiot!).

The new chapter of Necro;Chronicle took a new direction, to say the least. When you see it you'll either be a loyal fan or done for good with this series. Look for it sometime this month. Unfortunately, I won't be posting raws for Maken-Ki! and Triage X for a little over a week. I'm going on vacation, and there's simply no time.

Oh, and just so you know, the iron-fisted censors at Dragon Age were on break this month:

This is exactly what it looks like...

    1. If it is, then I would expect a final chapter at some point. Yen Press is in communication with the publisher and they make it sound like there is plenty of new material coming.

    2. Are you referring to this post on Yen Press' site?

Re: Highschool of the Dead new chapters

The exact schedule for the releases of new HOTD chapters has not yet been finalized. As new chapters are published in Japan, we will be releasing them simultaneously, but we do not yet have information on when the next chapter is planned.
It’s great to see so much enthusiasm for the new chapter! We thank you again for supporting HOTD and Yen Press releases!

    3. Pretty much, among other posts and statements. Yen Press is a professional company. They wouldn't make themselves appear to have inside knowledge just to build intrigue and sales. Oh, wait, actually they would.

Maybe they're just as much in the dark as I am, but I hope not.

  2. Sucks that HOTD aint coming back but it is good news that fire fire fire is coming back. If I can't have the one then at least I can have the other.

  3. HOTD is going to return eventually. I would like Shouji to finish HOTD and THAN start something new. All he needs to do is give us few more chapters, than everyone will be satisfied.
Question - How many series usually are in 1 Dragon Age magazine?

    1. It varies. Usually there are about 30-35 chapters each month, including about 1-3 oneshots.

  4. RIP Highschool Of The Dead, 6/9/2013. You will be sorely missed .___.
    WHY? WHYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?
But in all seriousness, I certainly hope they come back to it. I love where the story is going and I'd love to see it finish. With some publicity, I'm sure it could be a success.

  6. This is frustrating. It seems like shouji has developed adhd & can't focus on anything. There's still a lot of story to tell & I'd think he'd be excited after being away so long. Give us HOTD!!!

  7. Where's that last tentacle image from?

and sad about HOTD, guess I'll never watch a second season :'(

    1. It's from a short oneshot in this issue called "A Certain Around 30's Delusions." That was actually not the most explicit scene in it. The point of posting it is to show the absurdity in Japan's censorship laws. They can show this in a magazine without an age limit, and then they have to censor adult-only material. Just seems funny.

  8. As good as hentai is, I probably could've gone without seeing tentacles, though I guess I should have been tipped off by the caption beforehand. At any rate, I assume that HOTD will resume publication in the next few months; I doubt it'll take too long for the publishers to gauge its success, and, hopefully, Yen Press won't mess around when it comes to the next "simultaneous release".

    1. Sorry if you were offended. They are actually water hoses, but the girl fantasizes that they are tentacles. I've decided to find the most sexually explicit image from each issue and post it to show readers both the laid-back position of sexuality in Japanese culture and the hypocrisy of Japan's censorship laws.

    2. Oh, no, I was merely surprised. I'm guessing Dragon Age uses the traditional "black lines over everything important" rule (which doesn't work well for male characters because we can still see 95% of it). Why make sexual content that automatically has to be censored?

      Delete
    3. Well, they don't really need black lines because there's nothing that overtly sexual. The thing I find hilarious is that a magazine like this can show camel toes that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination and girls being covered in something indiscernible from semen by phallic tentacles, yet manga intended for adults has to conceal a certain amount of nudity.

The goal of Dragon Age is to get away with as much as they can without having to actually censor more than roughly half the nipples in each issue. The "iron-fisted" comment was sarcasm.

    1. All that's available publicly is what I post, it seems. I don't think anyone will ever scan the entire thing. You'd have to pay me about $100 a month just to consider scanning all 1500+ pages.

If you really want to see the rest of the magazine, I would recommend buying it.
