Highschool of the Dead Returning

I had planned to wait until I had more information to post about this, but I guess I might as well deliver the news since everyone else is.

It seems Highschool of the Dead is finally returning from its hiatus, which began in March 2011 after the release of Chapter 29. Both the cover of the Full Color Edition Volume 5 (below) and this month's Monthly Dragon Age announce a "restart" or "reboot" of the series. No date has been made apparent yet, so we will have to wait until the FCEs and magazines are released on the 9th to see if there is a date given.

Here is the FCE cover:

What makes me a bit nervous is the three large kanji on the band. HOTDcups tells me they translate to something like "reboot," and Google says they mean "restart." In either case, there seems to be a possibility that the series is not returning by continuing the main story, but rather with a new story or a retelling of the original. This would be a major disappointment considering where the story left off.

I personally think the series will make a full return to the original story, but we'll have to wait for more information to be certain. Hopefully I'll have something definite for you within the next few days. Stay close!

  1. HOTD is finally back. but if it's a reboot, I'm sure quite of few people aren't going to be pleased.

  2. Well, it took long enough. After a year (I think? How long has it been?) I'm a little anxious about that "restart", though it could just mean that it's being resumed. Whatever this means, it's news, which has been pretty scarce from the Sato Brothers. Thanks for this!

    1. It has been nearly two years. The last new chapter was released in March 2011. I think the true meaning of the word is lost in translation and "restart" or "reboot" are just the closest approximations. I am fairly confident the original story will be resumed.

  3. Id say that what they really mean is that theyre restarting to make new chapters not a new retelling as that wouldnt really make sense and possible turn a lot of fans of the series mysself included but i guess it depends how theyd tackle it if it was a complete reboot and if it is i wouldnt like for them to change any of the characters or tell the story in a different way cause i think it told perfectly the way it is

  4. Actually i wouldn't mind if they reboot the serie as long as the rebooted manga don't go on hiatus after the 29 chapter.
    ok joke aside.
as long as Shizuka and Saeko remain in the story they can do whatever they want. i just don't want them to touch my favorites sets of torpedo tits, i am so happy there are finally news about this, actually i looked everyday hoping HOTD to comeback.

    Thanks Turambar

  5. Being familiar with kanji myself, I can say for sure that it means "restart", rather than "reboot/reset".

Though unless more info comes out, I wouldn't take the words too literally.

  6. Oh well I can understand what that large kanji means. It doesn't really meant by restart or reboot. It means that I will start going again, start moving again, going active again. So I don't think they will actually start all over again.

    1. Thank you for your insight. The way it was explained to me before is that the word has different connotations, so I was leaving myself open to all possibilities. The way you explain it makes me much more confident than I was.

  7. - In Hollywood for movie lingo "reboot" does not always mean a remake but can be either a remake, continuation, prequal, or sequal. It's simply a general way of saying they want to do something with it but either they dont know or it hasn't been made public.

    1. That's a good point, but we're dealing with a Japanese word translated into a language not even distantly related to it. The issue here seems to be that there is no English word that gives the exact meaning and usage of the Japanese word in this context.

  8. Perhaps it means that the new chapters will be starting as a side story (possibly one of shodiou's cult kids), to bring us up to date with the story or to show how they got to where we left off or something.

    1. I wouldn't oppose a few chapters of back story. I think the first new chapter will dedicate several pages, if not most of the chapter, to recapping the story in some way.

  10. I agree that the kenji merely means "restart"..
without any impression about "reboot" or "restart at a different chapter". so it should be fine

And thanks for all the good work :)

  12. Speedy_J Here,

I'm expecting new chapters to show up around May or June. The end of Chapter 29 mentioned that Chapter 30 was supposed to be on the June issue of Monthly Dragon Age, so they're probably still going to meet that deadline.

But question. When the new chapters do come out, Who can we expect to translate the new chapters and where would we go to read them?

    1. There actually was a chapter in the June 2011 issue, but it was a color chapter instead of a new one. They apparently printed the color chapter to stall because they didn't have a new one ready. If the announcement is coming now, I would expect it to return next month.

As far as I know, HOTDcups will resume the translation, meaning it will be a Scans of the Dead project and you can find new chapters here.

  14. Speedy_J here,

Mr. Turambar, here's a question for you. How do YOU personally feel about the series return from Initial reaction to current emotions?

    1. Well initially I was skeptical because of the rumor-mongering that has plagued this series, but then I saw the proof in the form of the FCE cover and my doubt instantly gave way to excitement.

I am still very much excited about the return. I am nearly bursting with anticipation for my own copies of Dragon Age and the FCEs to get here so I can see the news for myself and share anything new with all of you. I have been waiting for this for two years, so I am thrilled the end of the hiatus is imminent. I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

  16. Finally the ball starts moving again. Good on you for being patient enough to wait 2 years and have this blog run on for so long.

  17. Why does everyone think its a remake of the series? apparently logical thinking is no longer common amongst people :/ If you put a single grain of thought into this you'd realize restart means a restart from the beginning of the series due to its long hiatus. It'll still be published by the same magazine but the story will just be published from chapter one again.
