Anime News: Dispelling Rumors About Season 2

I know I don't typically discuss the anime here, but it seemed necessary today.

As most of you probably know, a rumor began circulating around the internet after the end of the first anime season that the second season would begin on September 5 of this year. I am happy to finally be able to officially dispel this rumor. I'm sure most of you knew this was only a rumor as it was coming from forum postings rather than an official source, but I still see this rumor quite frequently on various sites. It's the 5th in Japan, Anime Network's original time for the simulcast has now passed, and there is no new Highschool of the Dead episode. Sure, the airtime could change, but this is something that would have been announced months ago.

There is good news, however. There was a H.O.T.D. panel at Anime Expo this summer (Tetsuro Araki was there), and a second season for the anime was confirmed. There was no information on a release date or even any indication of when production will begin. All that can be said for sure is that there will be a second season. I am almost positive the announcement of a date will appear in Dragon Age, just as the original did, so I willpost scans of the announcement when it happens.

I'll be back with this month's Dragon Age update on Saturday if all goes well. If the package goes the long way around (i.e. through Hong Kong) it won't be until Monday or Tuesday. See you then.

UPDATE:
To see the video clip of the aforementioned HOTD panel, go here. Around 0:55, the interpreter says, "Definitely yes as long as we have everyone's support..." in response to the question of whether or not there will be a second season.

  1. This is the first time I've heard of this rumor. They barely have enough content to do 5 episodes let alone a 12 episode season.

  2. That's likely why they haven't started production yet, though I think they could stretch the story out a lot with more anime-only content.

  3. maybe the absence of the manga is the Daisuke is writing material for the second season, but knows that is only a less likely theory.

  4. He can't even finish his own novels. What makes you think he would do content for a second anime season? lol

  5. Mangaka writing new material for the anime is rare, but not unheard of. I don't think it would delay the manga, though.

I think the purpose of the hiatus may have been to allow Shouji to release enough TX chapters for Volume 3. That's why I think an announcement may be imminent now that Volume 3 is finished.

  6. it was you the took the video in the expo?

  7. No, that wasn't me. The expo is in California, and that's too far away from me to make it worth going.

  8. Wasn't Shouji working on both series at the same time before the hiatus?

  9. He was working on both for a while, but he was alternating their releases since both series were bimonthly. When Triage X became monthly, HOTD went on hiatus. I personally don't think this was a coincidence, but that's just my opinion.

  10. Daisuke Sato has a history of leaving his works out to dry without finishing them. Shouji Sato is still drawing the monthly spread for Heroine vs. Heroine, and during the last hiatus he drew the SchDead Museum every month too. Triage X going monthly can just as easily be explained by Daisuke not writing content enough to give Shouji work to do for HOTD. Heck, the author comments on the cover of Triage X volume 1 practically say outright that Triage X only started because Shouji's other work (HOTD) fell through. XLG's translation takes some liberties on the cover text, but it gets the basic point. Literally, it says something like "Triage X started due to unexpected incidents causing me to get a bit desperate..."

I've always thought the evidence available pointed to HOTD's bad release pace as being Daisuke's fault, and Japanese readers posting on the Internet seem to have come to the same conclusion.

  11. I agree that the delays would more likely be due to the author than the artist, but I was placing the blame more with Fujimi Shobo/Kadokawa than anyone. All releases are their ultimate decision, and they could be drawing things out to increase magazine and tankobon sales. I'm sure Daisuke's chronic writer's block is the true cause, but I still like to entertain the idea that Fujimi Shobo is behind it.

  12. So basically HOTD is too big to fail? It sounds like Fujimi Shobo would had cancel HOTD if it wasn't popular and selling magazines, tankobon and other merchandise.
